Area converter

The square meter is the SI reference unit for area, and it's built directly from the meter: one square meter is a square one meter on each side. Every other unit here scales from that definition — a hectare is 10,000 m² (a 100 m × 100 m square), an acre is 4,046.856422399999 m², and a square foot is 0.09290303999999998 m².

The default pairing is square meter to square foot. Multiply by 10.76391042 to go from square meter to square foot:

ft² = m² × 10.76391042

Reverse it by multiplying by 0.09290304, the same as dividing by 10.76391042. A 100 m² apartment measures 100 × 10.76391042 = 1,076.39 ft², and a 2,000 ft² house measures 2,000 × 0.09290304 = 185.81 m².

Real estate listings are the most visible everyday use: square meters dominate internationally, square feet dominate in the US and parts of Canada, so cross-border property comparisons need this conversion constantly. Agriculture and land management work in hectares almost everywhere except the US, which still measures farmland and lot sizes in acres. US land records go further still, using rods, chains, and the township-and-section grid that 19th-century surveyors laid across the country — a system still legally relevant for rural property boundaries today. At the opposite end of the scale, physicists use the barn (10⁻²⁸ m²) to describe the cross-sectional area of atomic nuclei in particle collisions.

A fact that trips people up: a US survey “section” and a “square mile” are not just similar, they are exactly the same area (both equal 2,589,988.11 m²), because the Public Land Survey System was deliberately built so that one section of land is one square mile. A more common error, though, is confusing acres with hectares — a hectare is roughly 2.47 acres, not a near-equal swap, so treating the two as interchangeable can overstate or understate a land area by well over double.
